La Galerita is a social enterprise designed to support our community. The focus of the store is to sell art and other products made from locally sourced or recycled materials.
This enables women from the region to practice their craft and earn a wage whilst maintaining the traditional role of full-time housewife and mother. Many of the women work directly from their home, making products that are completely unique, dependant upon the artist and the range of materials available to them.
The artists who contribute to La Galerita come from a range of locations, backgrounds and financial situations. Every product purchased provides a much-needed income directly to the individual artist. With each sale, the artists can purchase tools and equipment to improve their craft, as well as helping to provide for their families. La Galerita features a number of these local artists.
The women’s co-op’s of Isla Mujeres make beautiful, unique handcrafted handbags and bead work jewelry that are sold in La Galerita. Each piece of beadwork is a one of a kind creation and make great gifts. The bags are made from soda can tabs and can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to make and are each completely unique.
The Chiapian Dolls are handmade in the Mexican state of Chiapias. These dolls are one of a kind creations made by the locals of the region. They also make great gifts and when you purchase one you are supporting both the local Chiapian community on Isla Mujeres and PEACE!
La Galerita also has a number of generous donations from local artists such as Rebecca Peragine who has donated some amazing artwork to La Galerita and has also set up a project with the PEACE womens co-op to make Recycled Bird Mobiles. This is a fantastic project that she has allowed us to create employment on Isla Mujeres! 8 women are involved with the project and earning money!
We also have many many other things to catch your eye from regionally made bath and beauty products, books by local authors, one of a kind pieces of art, postcards, t-shirts, and much more.

“Otra Vez” is Isla Mujeres’s newest addition. A community supported permanent bizarre open to all. With more than half the store priced at $2 - $20 pesos there are lots of bargains!! We have tons of great books!! Bring us ANYTHING you have of value - the half a box of tile sitting under the stairs, the orange lifejacket you have and never use, the #1 Husband mug your ex gave you…you have it, we want it!! If we cant sell it we will give it away, but somebody wants your stuff! Lets get that stuff collecting dust back out into the community into the hands of someone that needs it. We are collecting all kinds of items from kitchen appliances, toys, clothes, construction materials, tools, even the kitchen sink. One of the best ways to donate is to help spread the word. And don’t forget that 100% of the proceeds go to support community programs. Open Monday – Saturday 5pm – 10pm behind La Galerita. Donate-Shop-Donate-Shop!
